| Despite taking an early lead through a Gareth Morgan penalty after three minutes, the visitors soon fell behind due to ill discipline inside their own 22, as Newcastle struck two penalties to make the score 6-3.
Further infringements led to back row Drew Hicky being sin binned, from which the Flacons increased their lead to 11-3 through a catch and drive.
The lead was increased to 18-3 as Newcastle pilled on the pressure. Warriors managed a try through Charlie Fellows and a penalty on the stroke of half time from Morgan to make the half time score 18-11 and keep the game within reach.
A quick fire exchange of penalties after half time took the score to 21-14 before Newcastle scored and converted a breakaway try to take their lead to 28-14 with ten minutes to go.
Worcester showed great spirit with several replacements making an impact. A kick to the corner from a penalty allowed Ben Gotting to execute a well organised catch and drive, which Morgan kicked the conversion which showed signs of a possible come back.
The game was effectively put out of the Warriors reach though when Newcastle slotted yet another penalty to take their lead to 10, making the score 31-21.
A gutsy last effort by Worcester saw Tom Wheatcroft touch down after the visitors ran a penalty from inside their own half to bring the back within bonus point range and make the final score Newcastle A 31 Worcester Warriors A 26.
“We were disappointed that ill discipline and failure to implement aspects of our game plan allowed Newcastle to construct a controlling points difference that forced us to play catch up rugby for the majority of the game,” said Academy Manager Andrew Stanley.
“To our credit we showed a lot of character to be playing for a result at the end of the game and managed to obtain a losing bonus point.”
